This area presents brief background to the partners’ organization and the projects implemented under this component. So far five partners are currently implementing different projects under ultra-poor and upscaling component including; Care Malawi, Save the Children, World Relief, COMSIP Cooperative Union, and OXFAM.
PARTNER’S PROFILE : CARE International in Malawi was established in 1998 as an office of CARE International a US non-profit NGO that works in over 95 countries around the world to save lives, defeat poverty and achieve social justice. The organization is focusing food security, agriculture, health, education, and social and economic empowerment, especially for women. CARE supports increasing market linkages, promotes diversified livelihoods, organizes Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs), and provides entrepreneurship training.
ABOUT THE PROJECT: Through FARMSE, CARE is implementing a 36 months Project called Tidzidalire for the ultra-poor households to graduate out of poverty and be
self-reliant and food secure.
PROJECT BENEFICIARIES: 3,700 Ultra poor households households (1,850 Chikwawa and 1,850, Salima), 20% being the youth.
PROJECT AREA: Chikwawa and Salima.

PARTNER’S PROFILE : Save the Children, a global leader development and humanitarian programming worldwide, is working in Malawi since 1983. Save the
Children is focusing on six thematic areas including Child Protection, Education, Health, Child Rights Governance, Child Poverty and Humanitarian. The organisation works
directly or through partners in 20 of 28 districts.
ABOUT THE PROJECT: In partnership with CRECOM, SCI is implementing the Pathways for Successful Transition (PAST) project to graduate ultra-poor households, especially women-headed and youth and transition and sustain them into resilient livelihoods. The project uses a combination of approaches including Sustainable
Livelihood Approach (SLA); Adolescent Skills for Successful Transition (ASST), Life Skills for Success (LS4S), and Positive Youth Development (PYD).
PROJECT BENEFICIARIES: 3,750 ultra-poor households.

PROJECT PERIOD: 3 years (2019-2022)
PROJECT INTERVENTIONS:
PARTNER’S PROFILE : World Relief is a global Christian humanitarian organization that brings sustainable solutions to the world’s greatest problems – disasters, extreme poverty, violence, oppression, and mass displacement. World Relief started operating in Malawi in 1989 to address the aforementioned issues through an integrated, church-centered community model. Through the ministry of the local church, vulnerable children are being cared for, youth are being empowered to prevent the spread of HIV, mothers are learning how to raise healthy children, and farmers are being trained to improve the value of their crops and livestock.
ABOUT THE PROJECT: Through this project, World Relief aims to address the challenges facing ultra-poor households them helping them build up their social and financial capacity and skills to allow them to move out of and stay out of poverty.
PROJECT BENEFICIARIES: 3,700 ultra-poor households will graduate off the social
cash transfer programs.
PROJECT AREA: Dedza and Mangochi districts
PROJECT PERIOD: 3 years (2019-2022)
PROJECT INTERVENTIONS:
PARTNER’S PROFILE : Community Savings and Investment Promotion (COMSIP) is a member owned union of savings and investment cooperatives covering the whole Malawi and registered under the Cooperative Act No 36 of 1998. COMSIP owned by primary cooperatives, working to transform traditional savings and investment practices to formal savings and investment ventures in both urban and rural areas to generate income to enable the poor to come out of the poverty cycle. The main thrust is on savings mobilization and capacity building required by the poor communities to make savings decisions, and eventually invest from what they save.
ABOUT THE PROJECT: COMSIP is implementing the BSLUP to graduate ultra-poor households into sustainable and resilient households. The project works to improving food security status of the ultra-poor households; improve economic resilience of the ultra-poor household; improve nutrition and health status of the ultra-poor households and improve housing structures of the ultra-poor households.
PROJECT BENEFICIARIES: 3,750 households are expected to graduate.
PROJECT AREA: Mulanje and Phalombe
PROJECT PERIOD: 3 years (2019-2022)
PROJECT INTERVENTIONS:
PARTNER’S PROFILE : Oxfam has worked in Malawi for over 20 years. OXFAM is working on four key areas, including governance to support Malawian women, men and young people enjoy equitable and accessible public services and having influence on decisions that affect their lives; livelihood resilience particularly, targeting women and youth to have more sustainable livelihoods, be more economically empowered; transformative women’s leadership (TWL) to Malawian women and girls enjoy lives free from violence and make them active participants and leaders in their society; and humanitarian work to ensure that Oxfam and its partners have the ability to quickly and effectively respond to meet the needs of people affected by humanitarian emergencies.
ABOUT THE PROJECT: The Gender Responsive Ultra Poor Graduation Project works to enhance resilience and sustainably graduate households, including at least 30%
women headed households and 20% youth headed households from ultra-poverty. The project will contribute towards realization of FARMSE’s overall objective which is to reduce poverty, improve livelihoods and enhance the resilience of rural households on a sustainable basis through a consortium of Oxfam (lead and grant holder) and Christian Aid (consortium member and co-applicant).
PROJECT CONSORTIUM MEMBERS: Eagles Relief is partner to Oxfam, implementing the project in Balaka, targeting 1, 250 beneficiary households. CARD is a partner to Christian Aid, implementing the project in Machinga district, targeting 2, 050 beneficiary households.
